Achievements
•Kevin Butrick, a senior at Eastern Mennonite University, Harrisonburg, has been named to the fall 2008 semester dean's list. He is a psychology major, and son of John and Frances Butrick of Carrollton.
•Michael Kelsey Smith of Ivor and Courtney Ann Wallace of Spring Grove each made the dean's list for the 2008 fall semester at Lynchburg College.
Events
Elementary School Dismissal. 1 p.m. Feb. 11. Expect your students home 2-1/2 hours earlier than usual.
School Board Meeting. 7 p.m. Feb. 11, Robert C. Claud Board Room, Isle of Wight County Courthouse. Residents who want to address the board can call the clerk's office at 357-0449 no more than three days before the meeting. People may also sign up on a sheet before the start of the meeting at the auditorium entrance. The agenda will be on the Web site, www.iwcs.k12.va.us, at least three days before the meeting.

Makeup Day. Feb. 16. This will be a normal school day for all Isle of Wight County public schools. This was originally scheduled as a day off for staff and students, but the closing on Jan. 20 requires the day be made up in attendance.

Parent-Teacher Conferences. 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Feb. 6. Students will not be in school. Teachers will not be available during lunch break from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Report cards will be distributed at this time.

This will give parents information on the upcoming course registration process that begins this month. All current 9th-, 10th- and 11th-grade students and their parents are invited to attend, along with the parents and students in the upcoming ninth-grade class for 2009-2010. Call the guidance departments at 923-5240, 925-5790 or 923-4101 respectively.
President's Day. Feb. 16. Suffolk Public Schools will be closed.

Pruden Center for Industry and Technology Annual Open House. 5-8 p.m. Feb. 19. Parents or guardians of 9th-, 10th- and 11th-grade students attending high school in Isle of Wight County or Suffolk are invited, as well as community members and all others who have an interest in attending Pruden Center. Does a mum who smokes make a naughty child?

Cardiff researchers have for the first time studied whether smoking during pregnancy can directly make children more likely to behave anti-socially.
The unique study by scientists at the University Schools of Medicine and Psychology examined the records of 779 children born by in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) whose prenatal environment was provided by either a related mother or an unrelated mothe
They found a link between anti-social behaviour in children whose mothers smoked in pregnancy – but only when the mother was genetically linked to the child.
When the child came from a donated egg and donated embryo – egg or embryo donation or surrogacy - there was no link, suggesting factors other than smoking during pregnancy influence anti-social behaviour.
The results of the study, funded by the Wellcome Trust, have been published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
It is well-established that smoking during pregnancy, whether the mother is genetically related to the baby or not has an adverse effect on birth weight.
But links between what mothers do in pregnancy and how it may affect the mental health and behaviour of children are less researched. While mothers who smoke during pregnancy are more likely to have anti-social children, it has not been clear if this is a direct result of the smoking.
The researchers were able to study IVF children, with differing degrees of genetic relation to their parents, to disentangle the effects of genetic influences and the prenatal environment.
The study is the first of its kind in the world to allow these effects to be separated. In the published paper, the researchers looked at effects of mother's smoking in pregnancy on the child's birth weight and the child's behaviour, paying particular attention to mothers not genetically related to their unborn baby.

Professor Anita Thapar, clinical child psychiatrist and Principal Investigator on the study said: "What we have been able to confirm is that cigarette smoke in pregnancy does lower birth weight regardless of whether the mother and child are genetically related or not, but the link with children's behaviour is different.
"It is now clear that offspring anti-social behaviour is more dependent on inherited factors passed from mother to child, as our group of children with mothers who smoked during pregnancy with no direct genetic link showed no increased signs of anti-social behaviour.
"This suggests that other influencing factors such as the mother's personality traits and other inherited characteristics are at play during the development of a baby."
Professor Thapar believes this unique approach opens the way to tease apart the effect of genes and environment on a variety of other conditions in the future and has significant policy implications.
She said: "This type of research is able to tell us what sorts of interventions in pregnancy are the right ones to focus on in order to improve the physical and mental health of children."
The paper's other authors include Dr Frances Rice, formerly of School of Medicine, and Professor Gordon Harold, formerly School of Psychology, Dr Jacky Boivin and Professor Dale Hay, School of Psychology and Dr Marianne van den Bree, School of Medicine.
The Study received £125,000 from a Wellcome Trust Showcase Award for novel research, and a further £385,000 Project Grant to conduct the study.

Does a mum who smokes make a naughty child?

Cardiff researchers have for the first time studied whether smoking during pregnancy can directly make children more likely to behave anti-socially.
The unique study by scientists at the University Schools of Medicine and Psychology examined the records of 779 children born by in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) whose prenatal environment was provided by either a related mother or an unrelated mothe
They found a link between anti-social behaviour in children whose mothers smoked in pregnancy – but only when the mother was genetically linked to the child.
When the child came from a donated egg and donated embryo – egg or embryo donation or surrogacy - there was no link, suggesting factors other than smoking during pregnancy influence anti-social behaviour.
The results of the study, funded by the Wellcome Trust, have been published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
It is well-established that smoking during pregnancy, whether the mother is genetically related to the baby or not has an adverse effect on birth weight.
But links between what mothers do in pregnancy and how it may affect the mental health and behaviour of children are less researched. While mothers who smoke during pregnancy are more likely to have anti-social children, it has not been clear if this is a direct result of the smoking.
The researchers were able to study IVF children, with differing degrees of genetic relation to their parents, to disentangle the effects of genetic influences and the prenatal environment.
The study is the first of its kind in the world to allow these effects to be separated. In the published paper, the researchers looked at effects of mother's smoking in pregnancy on the child's birth weight and the child's behaviour, paying particular attention to mothers not genetically related to their unborn baby.

Professor Anita Thapar, clinical child psychiatrist and Principal Investigator on the study said: "What we have been able to confirm is that cigarette smoke in pregnancy does lower birth weight regardless of whether the mother and child are genetically related or not, but the link with children's behaviour is different.
"It is now clear that offspring anti-social behaviour is more dependent on inherited factors passed from mother to child, as our group of children with mothers who smoked during pregnancy with no direct genetic link showed no increased signs of anti-social behaviour.
"This suggests that other influencing factors such as the mother's personality traits and other inherited characteristics are at play during the development of a baby."
Professor Thapar believes this unique approach opens the way to tease apart the effect of genes and environment on a variety of other conditions in the future and has significant policy implications.
She said: "This type of research is able to tell us what sorts of interventions in pregnancy are the right ones to focus on in order to improve the physical and mental health of children."
The paper's other authors include Dr Frances Rice, formerly of School of Medicine, and Professor Gordon Harold, formerly School of Psychology, Dr Jacky Boivin and Professor Dale Hay, School of Psychology and Dr Marianne van den Bree, School of Medicine.
The Study received £125,000 from a Wellcome Trust Showcase Award for novel research, and a further £385,000 Project Grant to conduct the study.

The journal Psychological Reports has ranked Idaho State University's Ph.D. program in clinical psychology first out of 207 programs nationwide and in Canada on its students' performances on a national professional examination.
"I think it is phenomenal that Idaho State University's program was ranked No. 1 out of 207 schools listed in this report," said Kandi Turley-Ames, Ph.D., chair of the ISU psychology department. "This is an objective measure of our program by Psychological Reports, and it just shows our students are working hard and getting topnotch training in their field by our faculty, adjuncts and affiliate faculty." TROY — A former Rensselaer County psychologist was sentenced Thursday to three years in prison after pleading guilty to having sex with a 14-year-old Tamarac High School student she was counseling.
Despite initially denying the charges, Jennifer A. Hastings, 33, pleaded guilty on Oct. 9, 2008, to all counts against her for having sex with the boy at her home and area motels in October 2007: performing a criminal sexual act, four counts of second-degree rape — all felonies — as well as misdemeanors of sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child.
She was sentenced to three years in prison on each rape count and for the criminal sexual act, while the misdemeanors netted her a total of one year and 90 days in prison. However, the sentences are all to run concurrently, amounting to a three–year prison term with five years of post-release supervision.
NOTE: Jennifer A. Hastings, 33, she was guilty on oct.9,2008, to all counts against her for having sex with the boy at her home and area motels in october2007.
Her attorney, Steve Coffey, had asked for leniency, but Judge Patrick McGrath did not spare Hastings jail time.
"You were given this young boy to help … and you did just the opposite," McGrath told her.
In a statement given before her sentence was read, Hastings tearfully apologized to her family and to the family of the boy, now 15, whose identity was not released.
The Sand Lake resident was employed by the county's Department of Mental Health when she was hired to counsel the boy as part of a court order in 2006. The counseling evidently took place without incident until early September of 2007, when the seven-count indictment indicates the first crimes occurred.
The investigation began in October after a state trooper noticed Hastings waiting in the parking lot of Tamarac High School, where the boy was a freshman at the time. Hastings told the trooper she was picking up her brother, but the trooper was familiar with the boy and knew he did not have an older sister.

The boy later described the sexual interactions between the two to police during questioning, and Hastings was arrested on Oct. 15, 2007. While the rapes were not forcible, a 14-year-old is not old enough to consent to having sex, according to state law.
She was suspended with pay from her position with the county, where she had been employed since 2003, and later resigned and had her psychology license suspended.
She initially pleaded not guilty in April of last year and went free on $20,000 bail. She also rejected a plea deal in September before admitting to the charges the following month.
The acts occurred at Hastings's home at 222 Sheer Road in Sand Lake and a Schodack motel, according to the indictment, as well as a Colonie motel, police said at the time.
The sentencing, held in the largest courtroom in Rensselaer County Court, drew a large number of spectators, a handful of whom were in tears after the reading of the sentence.

Maryland ranked No. 1 in the nation in the percentage of high school seniors taking and passing the rigorous Advanced Placement exams, squeaking by New York, which has held the top position for decades, according to a report released yesterday by the College Board.

The achievement comes years after Maryland strengthened the curriculum in middle and high schools to better prepare students for college. For instance, many students now take Algebra I in eighth grade so that they can take calculus by the time they graduate. The state also helped fund programs that encourage school districts to offer more AP courses, particularly to minority and low-income students.
"This is huge, because it's such a specific, national, high standard," said Maryland schools Superintendent Nancy S. Grasmick.
Gov. Martin O'Malley, who appeared at a news conference with Grasmick at the State House, called the ranking "remarkable" and said it was a testament to the large investment the state had made in education in recent year

Of Maryland's Class of 2008, 23.4 percent of the students took and passed at least one or more of the exams, significantly above the nationwide average of 15 percent. New York came in second with 23.3 percent of students passing.
Maryland increased the number of students taking Advanced Placement at a faster pace than all but two states and has gotten an increasingly larger percentage of African-Americans to take the exams. Only four states have a higher percentage of blacks passing the test.
But the state still has significant work to do. The report notes that while Hispanics and whites are represented in AP classrooms in the same percentages as they are in the student population, blacks are not equally represented. Black students represent 18 percent of students in AP classrooms in Maryland, far less than the 34 percent in the general population of seniors
Maryland also has a lower percentage of its low- income students taking AP classes compared to some other leading states. About 1 in 10 students sitting in AP classrooms qualify for a reduced-price school lunches, compared with nearly double that rate in New York.
Disparity remains in the state. Two Maryland high schools were recognized for having the highest percentage in the nation of African-American seniors passing the tests: Paint Branch in Montgomery County for the world history exam and Eleanor Roosevelt in Prince George's County for the chemistry exam. By contrast, Polytechnic Institute and City College had relatively lower pass rates.

A passing grade is 3 or better on a scale of 1 to 5. A student who scores a 5 would be expected to get an A in an introductory-level college course in that subject. Students who receive a 3 would be expected to earn between a C and a B-minus. Some colleges give credit in those cases, saving students tuition costs.
Montgomery County performed exceptionally well, with 61 percent of its graduating class taking an AP exam and 46 percent of the class passing.
In Baltimore County, 19.4 percent of last year's class passed - up 10 percentage points in the past decade. Superintendent Joe A. Hairston said the consistent upward trend is part of "an ongoing process." He added, "When you think in terms of the scope and scale of our school system and our population, we're very pleased with the performance of our young people at this point."
While Baltimore City and Baltimore County participation rates are not as high as those in some of Maryland's wealthy suburban counties, they compare favorably to districts in the rest of the nation, said Trevor Packer, head of the AP program for the College Board, which writes and scores the test. In the city, participation has increased rapidly in recent years as more AP classes are offered, but passing rates have not risen as much.
Baltimore County has set a goal of offering at least 12 AP classes in each high school. Franklin High School in Reisterstown has regularly added advanced courses to its offerings, looking at them as "the way to go for all of our students," said Kathleen H. Schmidt, the principal.
This year, Franklin has a new human geography class designed for 10th-graders, and an environmental science course is planned for the fall. The AP psychology class is so popular, it's the only course that the instructor teaches, Schmidt said.
"It's opened up opportunities for kids. It's certainly an emblem of pride, I think, for the school and for the staff," Schmidt said of the AP courses. "It's not an exclusive club any longer. . . . It's extremely important for the kids who can achieve, and their achievements are beyond the school."
Nearly 220 students took about 420 tests last year, Schmidt said, compared with 60 taking about 90 exams a decade ago. The school saw 100 percent pass rates in several subjects, including physics, economics and chemistry, Schmidt said.
Packer, of the College Board, said Grasmick set the goals for the state."At the state level there has been leadership and directives that have fostered a sense of expectations in the local school districts." He said much of work has been been done at the local level by administrators who designed a curriculum that would give students the preparation early on.
Grasmick said that seven years ago she began a partnership with the College Board that includes a staff member at the State Education Department, paid jointly by the College Board and the state, who is responsible for helping schools establish and expand AP programs.
Grasmick also said Maryland has been successful in receiving federal grants that have allowed state schools to prepare middle school students for AP classes in high school. An additional $2 million grant, which will be targeted primarily to city schools, has just been received, she said.
The College Board does not prescribe a curriculum for the Advanced Placement courses, nor is there an AP textbook. Teachers develop their own lesson plans in the more than 30 courses that the College Board tests, from English language to calculus to Spanish to art. To pass the exams, students must have mastered a certain amount of the material. Increasingly, the AP exams are requiring students to answer questions with more depth and analysis, rather than simply showing they have mastered the facts. For the AP exam in art, students turn in a portfolio rather than take a written exam.
Getting a 3 or better on an AP exam is considered a predictor of how well students will do in college. A recent study showed that even among students in the same socioeconomic and racial groups, those who had taken and passed AP tests got better grades in college than those who did not. In addition, students who had taken AP classes were more likely to graduate from college in four years.

As parts of the country grind to halt, crippled by heavy snowfall, most of the British public seem to be rather enjoying the freak weather.

Road conditions are treacherous and hospital A&E departments are reporting a surge in the number of broken wrists as people take a tumble on icy pavements.
But there is definitely a 'Blitz spirit' in the air.
Strangers are grinning and chatting to each other as they try to go about their usual routine.
Drivers good naturedly swap insurance details with a "what can you do?" shrug after their cars collide in icy slow motion.
"It's a little bit exciting in a funny kind of way, a little bit out of the ordinary," psychologist Dr Glenn Wilson, of King's College London, told Sky News Online.
"Adults become playful children because they can recall building snowmen and such in their youth.

"Weather like this is so unusual that it's bound to evoke memories of childhood and can also make people think of being on holiday.

"I think people like something a bit out of the ordinary - something to break the tedious routine. For others, it's an excuse to get off work."
And humanistic counsellor Joanna Yardley told Sky News Online: "People are connecting with each other on a child to child level.
"It's like a rubber band, pinging you back to a moment in your past."
But it seems there is a bit more science behind our good mood than simply happy childhood memories.
Dr Wilson explained: "The high levels of illumination that you get with sun and snow may be reviving people in terms of vitamin D and psychologically in terms of spirit.

"A lot of people suffer from a kind of winter depression and light is one of the things that will help get us well and fit."
And it seems the camaradarie and smiling stoicism - or 'Blitz spirit' - seen this week is not such a cliche.
"Another aspect of the excitement is that we are facing a common threat," explained Dr Wilson.
"Psychology shows the thing that brings groups and people together is a common threat."
Mrs Yardley agrees: "It's a bit of a Blitz mentality - we must all pull together and get through it."
So, if the snow is still lingering at the weekend, dust off that old sledge and say hello to your inner child.
